The ONE Morning Change that Can Improve Your Health

Woman Waking Up in the Morning

Good morning!

Now, if you’re anything like me, that particular greeting is more likely to be met with a grimace or a grunt than a smile. Mornings just aren’t my favorite time of day. At least they weren’t, until I made one simple change to my morning routine.

Instead of reaching for my coffee mug first thing, I sip on lemon water as I wake up. All it takes is squeezing half a lemon into a glass of cool or hot cup of water, and you’ve got a healthy morning beverage that gets your day started the right way.

Stay with me, coffee lovers, because it really does make sense when you think about it.

When you wake up in the mornings, you’ve gone between six and eight hours without a sip of water. Your whole body’s dehydrated. That means everything—from your brain on down—is working at reduced capacity.

That cup of coffee you’re anxious to brew? It will just dehydrate you further.

Starting with lemon water, though, helps bring your brain, and the rest of your body, back up to speed as you rehydrate.

It also:

Boosts immunity

Lemon water is an easy way to help boost immunity. First, it’s a great source of vitamin C, so your immune system gets the support it needs. Along with that, the acid from the lemons creates an unfriendly environment for germs. They can’t thrive in a highly acidic setting, so they die off before they can make you sick.

Brings on antioxidant power

This one goes hand in hand with overall health. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that keeps you healthy. This means it helps protect your body from the free radicals that cause oxidative damage. Oxidative damage contributes to everything from wrinkles to cancer. Lemon water every morning can be your first line of defense.

Supports liver function

Your liver does a great job keeping your body clean and free of toxins—but what keeps your liver clean? In animal studies, compounds in lemons have been shown to protect the liver from fatty deposits so it can function properly. Lemon also may help your liver process those toxins more efficiently.

Promotes kidney health

Kidney stones can form when you aren’t getting enough water. Byproducts don’t get flushed from the kidneys, but instead, clump together, forming the stones. Lemon water may help prevent this on two levels.
1. The water keeps you hydrated so the toxins get flushed completely.
2. The acid from the lemon may prevent remaining particles from clumping together. It can stop kidney stones from ever forming.

Helps with digestion

You know stomach acid is essential to proper digestion. What you may not know is that the older you get, the less stomach acid your body produces. Adding the acid from the lemons can help get your digestive system revved up and working. For best results, drink this one warm.

Starting your day with lemon water can help improve your day, and your health.

Daily Tip: Instead of buying a cooking spray, invest in an oil mister. You avoid the chemicals used as the propellant, can mix and match your oils to your meals, and will save money in the long run!
